As of Thursday before dawn, at least 25 persons were reportedly killed in the landslide but 18 dead bodies have been dug from the mud so far. 16 persons was rescued and was reportedly to have injuries.

A deadly landslide had hit the Compostela Valley, Davao 4:30 am on Thursday - January 5, 2012. Small time miners who have been living on the actual mining sites are the ones who had suffered on the sudden landslide.

Executive Director of National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), undersecretary Benito Ramos said that the landslide hit Sitios Diat Uno and Diat Dos in Barangay Napnapan, Pantukan town, Davao City.

According to NRRDMC, a total of 150 were reportedly missing. However, the search and retrieval operation had been suspended a little early, at around 2:30 p.m., because of heavy rain fall. It can be recalled that a shallow low pressure area was seen over Mindanao area.

In regards to the incident, Philippine President Benigno Noynoy PNoy Aquino III has ordered Interior Secretary jesse Robredo to go to Compostela Valley on Friday, January 6, 2011.

Chief Superintendent Jaime Morente, Region 11 police director said that the landslide area was hard to reach by foot which made the rescue efforts a lot harder. Morente also indicated that an intermittent telecommunications signals in the area is also hampering the retrieval operation.

The landslide that struck Compostela Valley was said to have caused by heavy rain and a magnitude 3 earthquake.

When asked if the mining can be totally ban, Compostela Valley local authorities however said that the total ban cannot be consider as of now, but they are considering that living on the actual mining sites will be prohibited.
